R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Find out what it means, Bryce Harper

June 7, 2011 · 2 comments

Came across this video of wunderkind Bryce Harper — last year’s No. 1 Draft pick by the Washington Nationals — preening and strutting after hitting a home run (he doesn’t begin his trot four four seconds).

Yes, we know he’s got a lot of potential (Sports Illustrated and ESPN the Magazine cover stories). But if I was on the mound and he pulled this stuff on me? You’re going down next time, son. Now I know the modern athlete has been coddled since the age of 10 (or younger) and told how great s/he is, but along the way you have to learn something about humility.

This is what the opposing catcher should have done, at the very least.

Can’t wait until Harper gets to the big leagues and does this to a Roy Halladay or Bronson Arroyo or one of the other pitchers among active leaders in hit batsmen.

Ron, no question that Harper should be smart enough not to do this, but don’t assume its arrogance.

Every where he goes, he gets a lot of grief from opposing players, chants of “overrated,” from fans, etc.  You don’t know that the pitcher didn’t say something before hand.  $10 says that’s what happened here.

Harper needs to learn though, even if the pitcher did, you have to watch yourself because of the perception.

I would have hoped something came from the pitcher; it would have been even worse if Harper had made the gesture on his own.
