Team of the Times?

April 6, 2011

A while back, The New York Times occasionally published Play, a sports supplement magazine. Sadly, that welcome Sunday extra disappeared, undoubtedly a victim of declining revenues.

But the Times hearkened back to those flush days this week in its regular Sunday magazine.

The excellent Pat Jordan opines — and not always favorably — on the front of Philadelphia’s rotation with “The Phillies’ Four Aces” (Joe Blanton: “What am I? Chopped liver?”).

Nate Silver offers a sidebar on how the rotation stacks up against the all-time best.

Not sure exactly how to categorize this one — paean? homage? — but San Anderson contributed this piece on “Five Ways of Looking at The Legend of Derek Jeter.”

A few weeks back, The New York Times Style Magazine featured Tim Lincecum as its cover story, written by Jonathan Mahler. Sorry, but that’s not the most flattering picture I’ve ever seen. In fact, if it wasn’t for the headline, I wouldn’t have recognized him. He looks like a slightly less-wrinkled Carlos Santana here. I show these things to my daughter now, an aspiring photographer. For one thing, it gives her ideas. For another i gives her confidence, because some of her stuff is easily as good. (I know, I know, spoken like a true dad.)
