A haul of Hall books: Hoss Radbourn to Nolan Ryan

March 9, 2011

Intro: As previously stated, the recent election of Robert Alomar and Bert Blyleven got me to thinking: how many Hall of Famers have had books written about them or penned their own stories. Here are the results. Again, this is not an all-inclusive list; almost all juvenile titles have been omitted.

* * *

“R” is even more rich in the number of books, if not the number of Hall of Famers as “M.” Babe Ruth has more books written about him than any other player, and Jackie Robinson is no slouch either. Then there’s Branch Rickey…

Hoss Radbourn (Inducted 1939)

Pee Wee Reese (1984)

Sam Rice (1963)

Jim Rice (2009)

Branch Rickey (1967)

Cal Ripken Jr. (2007)
Because of his amazing work ethic, most of the books about Ripken seem to be written for younger readers, as a positive role model.

Eppa Rixey (1963)
There are no titles on Rixey.

Phil Rizzuto (1994)

Robin Roberts (1976)

Brooks Robinson (1983)

Frank Robinson (1982)

Jackie Robinson (1962)
Like Ruth, Robinson is the subject of books spanning numerous genres: baseball, juvenile, black history, American history, sociology, pop culture, and probably a few others I haven’t thought of. Several of these books were released to coincide with various anniversaries, primarily Robinson’s debut,at 25, 50, and 60 years.

Wilbert Robinson (Manager, 1945)

Bullet Rogan (Negro Leagues, 1998)

Edd Roush (1962)

Red Ruffing (1967)
There are no titles about Ruffing.

Amos Rusie (1977)
There are no titles about Rusie.

Babe Ruth (1936)
More books have been written about Ruth than any other ballplayer. It’s interesting to note how much more “adult” they became with the passing of time. It would be folly to try to list every one here, so these are just a sampling:

Nolan Ryan (1999)
