Photo book on Sandy just Dandy

February 25, 2011

The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, located in Commack, NY, opened an exhibit in December in celebration of Sandy Koufax’s 75th birthday.

The paintings, photographs, and other bric-a-brac have been assembled by Alan Freedman, director of the Hall into a beautiful paperback volume, Sandy Koufax: 32 at 75.

Fans of baseball/sports art will immediately recognize some of the people who lent their work to the exhibit, including David Levinthal, Graig Kreindler, Dick Perez, Stephen Holland, Vince Scilla, and Bill Gallo as well as photographers Neil Leifer and George Kalinsky. The artwork is accompanied by quotes about the Hall of Fame lefty, from opponents and teammates to authors and poets, to pop culture references: “The thousand years of beautiful tradition, from Moses to Sandy Koufax” (from The Big Lebowski).

The book is reminiscent of Willie Mays: Art in the Outfield, by Mike Shannon; in fact, Freedman admits that’s where he got his inspiration. (My review of the Mays book, which was published in 2007, can be found here.)

The book is available from Xlibris.com in paperback and hardcover. The price might strike some as a bit high, but you won’t find this collection of Koufaxania anywhere else.
