Literary birthday greetings: Garvey, Lefty, and the Tall Tactician

December 22, 2010

The birthday boys include 10-time All-Star Steve Garvey, Hall of Fame pitcher Steve Carlton, and long (long) time manager Connie Mack.

Garvey has a number of books by and about him, including My Bat Boy Days: Lessons I Learned from the Boys of Summer (Scribner, 2008); Garvey (Crown, 1986); and The Secret Life of Cyndy Garvey, by Cyndi Garvey (Doubleday, 1989, after the bottom dropped out for his All-American image).

You would have though someone would have written an adult book about Carlton. After all, the man won 329 games, was a four-time Cy Young winner, a 10-time All-Star, and a real “colorful character.” Perhaps it’s because we wasn’t exactly Prince Charming with the media. Anyway, there are a couple of kids’ titles on him, including Steve Carlton: Baseball’s Silent Strongman (The Achievers) and Steve Carlton, Star Southpaw.

Mack was one of the only managers to disdain the wearing of a uniform while performing his managerial duties. Norman Macht published Connie Mack and the Early Years of Baseball (University of Nebraska Press) in 2007 (see it on Google Books here). Mack wrote his own story — My 66 Years in the Big Leagues — originally published by John C. Winston in 1950, re-released by Dover Publications in 2009.
