Walter Alston was born this date in 1911. He struck out in his only at bat: Sept. 27, 1936 as member of the St. Louis Cardinals against the Chicago Cubs. But he more than made up for that as a Hall of Fame manager for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers.
Alston was inducted into the Hall by the Veterans Committee in 1983, a year before he died.
Alston penned a few books in his day, including:
- Alston and the Dodgers,
in 1966.
- A Year at a Time
(1976. The title comes from his penchant of signing one-year contracts)
Alston also worked on an instructional,The Complete Baseball Handbook: Strategies and Techniques for Winning (1972).
