Book reviews in SABR’s Baseball Research Journal

August 17, 2010

Received the latest (Summer 2010) issue of the BSJ. To be honest, a lot of the statistical stuff therein is a bit over my head/interest level, but there are several book reviews, so it balances out.

Among them:

  • Phil Birnbaum on The Bill James Gold Mine 2010
  • Lee Lowenfish on Satchel: The Life and Times of an American Legend and Satch, Dizzy and Rapid Robert: The Wild Sage [sic] of Interracial Baseball Before Jackie Robinson
  • Arthur Zillante on Baseball card-related titles, including The T206 Collection: The Players and Their Stories; Mint Condition: How Baseball Cards Became an American Obsession; Cardboard Gods: An All-American Tale Told Through Baseball Cards; and House of Cards: Baseball Card Collecting and Popular Culture
  • David Quentin Voigt on 59 in ’84: Old Hoss Radbourn, Barehanded Baseball, and the Greatest Season a Pitcher Ever Had
  • Andrew Goldblatt on Willie’s Boys: The 1948 Birmingham Barons, the Last Negro League World Series, and the Making of a Baseball Legend and Willie Mays: The Life, The Legend
  • Nicholas Frankovich on The Game From Where I Stand: A Ballplayer’s Inside View and The Bullpen Gospels: Major League Dreams of a Minor League Veteran
