* Eliot Asinof: Gone but not forgotten

January 26, 2009

Last November, SABR’s Board of Directors approved the creation of a new Research Committee, with the “Black Sox” scandal as its focus.
SABR members can join by following the link MySABR at the SABR web site … and can then join the Yahoo discussion group (which has grown since it started in 2003 to over 140 members), at 1919BlackSox-subscribe@yahoogroups.com .

From the latest This Week in SABR: The purpose of the new Black Sox Scandal committee is to conduct and make accessible “research that will increase our understanding of what historian Harold Seymour termed ‘baseball’s darkest hour’ – the events surrounding the fixing of the 1919 World Series.” It is hoped that continued research will shed light on gambling’s presence during the Deadball Era as well as its continuing effects and will allow for a better understanding of how players, management, the media, and baseball authorities responded to the scandal, which possibly set precedents affecting Major League Baseball today. The new committee is chaired by Gene Carney. Jacob Pomrenke is vice-chair, and Rod Nelson is the E-List Administrator.

A project that the committee will launch soon will aim to index books, articles and other material that can be used to research topics related to the B-Sox, noting their locations and accessibility. Regular newsletters containing research will follow.
