* More political mumbo-jumbo

So just who do those Brits think they are, printing a piece like “How Baseball Explains the U.S. Elections“?

Somewhere I’m sure there’s an article about World Series winners as a predictor of the Presidential elections. Hmm, let’s see.

Since the first World Series in 1903 (the Fall Classic wasn’t played in 1904), 25 have occurred in a presidential election year. The breakdown looks like this:

Year WS Winner Winning presidential party
1908 NL – Chicago Cubs Republican – Taft
1912 AL-Boston Red Sox Democrat – Wilson
1916 AL-Boston Red Sox Democrat – Wilson
1920 AL- Cleveland Indians Republican – Harding
1924 AL – Washington Senators Republican – Coolidge
1928 AL – NY Yankees Republican – McKinley
1932 AL – NY Yankees Democrat – Roosevelt
1936 AL – NY Yankees Democrat – Roosevelt
1940 NL – Cinn. Reds Democrat – Roosevelt
1944 NL – St. Louis Cardinals Democrat – Roosevelt
1948 AL – Cleveland Indians Democrat – Truman
1952 AL- NY Yankees Republican – Eisenhower
1956 AL – NY Yankees Republican – Eisenhower
1960 NL – Pitt. Pirates Democrat – Kennedy
1964 NL – St. Louis Cardinals Democrat – Johnson
1968 AL – Detroit Tigers Republican – Nixon
1972 AL – Oakland As Republican – Nixon
1976 NL – Cinn. Reds Democrat – Carter
1980 NL – Philadelphia Phillies Republican – Reagan
1984 AL – Detroit Tigers Republican – Reagan
1988 NL – LA Dodgers Republican – Bush
1992 AL – Toronto Blue Jays Democrat – Clinton
1996 AL – NY Yankees Democrat – Clinton
2000 AL – NY Yankees Republican – Bush
2004 AL – Boston Red Sox Republican – Bush

So what are we to glean from this information? It would appear — and this is by no means a scientific survey — that Republicans stand a better chance when the American League team wins (ten times), while Democrats benefit from a National League winner (seven). In the other years, Democrats won five times when the AL produced the World Champion, with the Republicans benefiting only three times via NL winners.

Keep your fingers crossed.
