This Week (er, last week), in Sports Illustrated

January 18, 2008

Don’t know what happened to my subscription to SI…I don’t remember any renewal notices/warnings…so I’ll have to kibbitz for awhile.
In the wake of The Roger Clemens 60 Minutes/press conference, Richard Hoffer contributed this item on his outrage in the Jan. 14 issue. The illustration is especially appropriate, depicting Clemens firing his legendary fastball (at his accuser? the press? the fans for not believing in him?) as he stands at the precipice of a canyon. Indeed, it would be a “grand canyon” into which he would fall in the sense that it would be so deep he could never climb out of it.
Last Dec. 24, Tom Verducci wrote about what happens next after the release of the Mitchell Report.
The Dec. 17 issue profiled the improving Tigers, who acquired Marlins stars Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera in the fall. (As a Mets fan, I’m glad to see them out of the NL East and out of the league altogether. And they don’t play the Tigers in Interleague this year either. Whew. We noew return you to our regularly scheduled blog).
