Financial Report: Covering Bonds

August 9, 2007

I was listening to the Mets game today and came in the middle of a comment from one of their announcers. All I got was the suspicion by someone that Hank Aaron might have received payment for his congratulatory message to Barry Bonds following the record breaking home run.

Now, coming in the middle of the conversation as I did, I was immediately P.O.’d as to who would be so cynical (so soon) as to even think of such a situation? If I ever find a report on it, I’ll add it to this entry. In the meantime, Newsweek posted this piece on how Aaron came to agree to the presentation.

Sports media columnists Richard Sandomir (NY Times), Howard Kurtz (Washington Post), and “The Daily Fix” team of Carl Bialik and Jason Frey (Wall Street Journal) are among those who give their takes on the coverage of Bonds’ recording-breaking home run. (Bialik also offers this interesting analysis in The Number’s Guy, a blog about the way “numbers are used, and misused.”)

Newseum is a great reference site that features front pages from newspapers across the world. Here’s a sample of how Bonds’ event was covered in the U.S.:

The San Francisco Chronicle

The Fresno Bee

The OC (Santa Ana) Post

The Rocky Mountain News
