The Hall of Famer and the first African-American manager in the game passed away today at the age of 83. Here’s his obituary from The New York Times by Richard Goldstein.
I had the chance to meet Robinson when he was manager of the Montreal Expos at the time it was thought they might be “contracted.” I had traveled to the city — my ancestral manse — with the idea of writing a book, the manuscript for which remains on the shelf.
Here’s the entry I posted on his birthday in 2008 about that experience and a list of books about the late, great Frank:
- Extra Innings, by Robinson, with Stainback, 1988
- Frank Robinson: The Making of a Manager, Schneider, 1976
- Frank: The first year, by Robnson, with Anderson, 1976
- Frank Robinson Born Leader, by Hirshberg
- My Life Is Baseball, by Robinson, with Silverman, 1968
- The picture story of Frank Robinson, by Young, 1977 (juvenile)
- Frank Robinson (Baseball Legends), by Macht, 1991 (juvenile)
And a link to many of his baseball card images.
ESPN Sport Century produced this documentary about Robinson, who also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from George Bush.
