Casey Stengel: Baseball's Greatest Character by Marty AppelCasey Stengel: Baseball’s Greatest Character by veteran baseball publicist and author Marty Appel has been named recipient of Spitball Magazine’s coveted CASEY Award.

From Spitball’s press release:

In garnering one first-place vote and two second-place votes, Mr. Appel received the clear approbation of the Judges, handily outdistancing the runner-up by four points. Judge Al Turnbull said, “Marty Appel’s Casey Stengel is a tour de force romp through the baseball life of an American icon and his impact on the game, as well as a “splendid” (to use a favorite word of Casey’s) account of baseball’s history during many decades.”

Spitball Editor Mike Shannon also praised the book, saying, “Casey Stengel was hardly a baseball nobody; in fact, reams had already been written about him. But when you pair a great subject like Casey and a wonderful writer and researcher like Marty, the results are usually spectacular as is the case here.”

By taking the 35th CASEY Award, Appel becomes a two-time CASEY Award winner, having won the 1996 CASEY for Slide, Kelly, Slide: The Wild Life and Times of Mike “King” Kelly, Baseball’s First Superstar. Appel is the third author, along with Howard Bryant and Kostya Kennedy, to earn this added distinction.

Appel will receive his CASEY Award, a specially made blue & gold engraved Louisville Slugger baseball bat, at the 35th CASEY Awards Banquet in Cincinnati in early March.

So mazel tov to Marty. Here’s the Bookshelf Conversation we had last April. That’s the honoree on the right with Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Ira Berkow and yours truly (a non-Pulitzer winner) at the Yogi Berra Museum in 2011.
