Guess who’s back?

October 24, 2016

Hello, friends. Been awhile. Apologies for the dearth of entries lately. Especially now that the season is over and your team’s season is over — unless your a Cubs or Indians fan — you’ll look for the comfort of books to get you through the long cold winter — unless you’re a resident of Florida, Arizona, ….

Any, to get personal for a minute, as way of explanation for my absence, I was recently dismissed from my job of the last dozen years with a weekly community newspaper. The publication was taken over by another entity who felt my contributions as sports editor, world news editor, letters to the editor editor, arts and features editor, and resident cut-up were no longer relevant. I take some solace in the fact that a) I have ts of company as the majority of the staff was canned, and b) the quality of the paper has gone downhill since the transition last month. The paper used to win awards for design and artwork as well as writing. I doubt that will be the case going down the road, all due respect to some of the writers who were retained. Schadenfreude lives!

greenbergcoverI must say, the timing wasn’t terrible. It gave me the opportunity to finish my manuscript for Hank Greenberg in 1938: Hatred and Home Runs in the Shadow of War, which is due out in the spring. I was able to give that y undivided attention and meet the deadline. (On the downside, sitting around so much exacerbated a back injury which rendered me inert for a time.)

I’m still looking for full-time employment, but anyone who reads knows that the print industry, especially newspapers, is on the decline. Several of my colleagues are in the same boat, including those who have been at it a lot longer than I and from more “prestigious” publications. SO I may have to look for another line of work. You want fries with that?

In the meantime, for better or worse, I have the time to get back to the Bookshelf. So here we go…
