The Yog turns 90 today, God bless. I ran this piece four years ago, listing several titles about and (ostensibly) by the Hall of Famer. Except for the age, the info remains valid except for the addition of my NJ neighbor Harvey Araton‘s excellent book, Driving Mr. Yogi: Yogi Berra, Ron Guidry, and Baseball’s Greatest Gift.
On MLB.com, Marty Noble writes in his column “Yogi petition started for Medal of Freedom,”
A petition has been created on the White House’s official website, seeking to have the Obama Administration bestow the prestigious award to the Yankees icon…for his military service and his activism in the civil rights and educational arenas.
As of this writing, there are about 5,500 “signatures”; 100,000 are needed, although “only” 94,553 by June 8. Seems you can vote more than once if you have multiple e-mail addresses.
I don’t know what the requirements for consideration for an MoF are, but an on-line petition? Did Ernie Banks and Stan Musial need this kind of campaigning? This should be a no-brainer; Berra is a national treasure.
Sadly, he’s not in the best of health these days. It would be nice to see him get this award in the very near future.
