Bits and pieces, May 21

Looking over the overlooked news in baseball books, etc.

Dwier Brown is making the rounds for his new memoir If You Build It…: A book about Fathers, Fate and Field of Dreams, which is doing very well on Amazon. (Here’s my Bookshelf conversation with Brown). My apologies in that the video opens on its own and I don’t know how to fix that. I removed the original video because it opens automatically and offer you this link instead.

♦ Missouri University of Science and Technology posted this on The Continental League, A Personal History, by Dr. Russell D. Buhite, a professor emeritus at the school.

The Last Perfect Summer by Ed Prence has been named as one of three finalists in the 26th annual Benjamin Franklin Award for best historical fiction of 2013.

Mookie Wilson and Bill Buckner are the Bobby Thomson and Ralph Branca of their generation.

♦ For all of you who are complaining about Million Dollar Arm, may I remind you: it’s a Disney movie. ESPN’s Outside the Lines reran their 2008 segment as part of a recent episode marking the release of the film. This is a pedigree there; Mark Ciardi, one of the producers — he also produced The Rookie, another Disney product —  was a Major Leaguer, pitching for the Milwaukee Brewers in 1987. And pay particular attention to a pre-beard Brian Wilson in the video.

♦ Finally, a request to the editors of The New Yorker. If you’re going to put a baseball theme on your cover, please have a baseball story in the issue. Thank you.
