Ralph Kiner was such a New York institution, I thought it appropriate to include more reactions to his passing:
- The New York Times called on their resident baseball obit writer Bruce Weber to write this lengthy piece while sports media columnist Richard Sandomir produced this appreciation. I found this quote from Howie Rose especially telling about today’s fans:
“He once dropped a name on us, Frenchy Bordagaray, which I couldn’t pronounce or make any reference to,” said Howie Rose, his former partner on cable TV. “But I did a little homework and learned about his career. When I hear younger fans criticize older broadcasters for their references to players from past generations, I wonder, ‘Do you have an ounce of curiosity?’”
- The Times also posted a video of the day’s news, in which Kiner was included (about the 45 second mark). He should have had his own tribute.
- Naturally the other local papers had their memories of Kiner, including the Daily News‘ Mike Lupica and Bob Raissman; the Post‘s Phil Mushnick; and Newsday’s Neil Best.
- From ESPN, The Sporting News, and MLB.com.
