Bits and pieces, Aug. 16

August 16, 2013

* I love a good deconstruction story. Here, author Dayn Perry joyously breaks down a number of baseball cards he recently purchased.

* The Columbus, Indiana, Republic posted this glowing review of Doug WIlson’s The Bird: The Life and Legacy of Mark Fidrych.

Alan Mindell (left) has published his first novel called 'The Closer.'* The Santa Monica Mirror published a profile of local writer Alan Mindell, who published his first novel The Closer, at the age of 72.

* In his podcast titled “Candlesticks,” comedian Greg Proops waxes nostalgic about the San Francisco Giants of the late 1970s-erly 80s. Definitely NSFW. Proops, whom you might recognize from his work on Whose Line Is It Anyway?, is quite amusing, but also very socially conscious and frequently uses his show as a platform for action (does that make this a prodcast?)

* Finally, in last Sunday’s NY Times Week in Review section, this opinion piece by Michael Farris Smith asking the burning question, “What if Novelists Took Steroids?” Food for thought. Most writers with whom I’ve conferred said they would not, but then, they’re already more thoughtful then the average bear.
