SABR ‘preview’: new projects coming down the pike

August 15, 2013

To paraphrase a Groucho Marx line (and with all due respect to the PETA faction), you can’t swing a dead cat (if that’s your idea of a good time) at the annual SABR conference without hitting a baseball writer.

While in Philadelphia, I caught up with a few of them (writers, not cats) to see what new and exciting projects they were working on. Bear in mind, these are in various stages of development/production:

* Robert Fitts, author of the Setmour Award-winning Banzai Babe Ruth: Baseball, Espionage, and Assassination during the 1934 Tour of Japan, is working on a biography of Masanori Murakami, the first Japanese-born pitcher to play in the Majors. Do out from the University of Nebraska Press next year.

* Norman Macht, who has produced two massive biographies of Connie Mack, was compiling the third volume for UNP.

* Dan Schlossberg is putting the finishing touches on his project with former ML umpire Al Clark, titled Nothing to Hide: My Journey from the Big Leagues to the Big House, also a UNP book due out this fall.

* Lyle Spatz and Steve Steinberg are teaming up once again on a biography about Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert for a 2015 release from, you guessed it, UNP.

* Dorothy Mills, who worked with her late husband, Harold Seymour, on what some call the essential baseball history series, is working on a novel about a female ballplayer.

* Eric Rolfe Greenberg, author of the acclaimed baseball novel The Celebrant: A Novel, said he had in mind a story about a ballplayer challenging Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak. NOT a UNP book. By the way, Greenberg participated in the “Imagining Baseball” panel with Steve Wulf and Mark Cooper, moderated by John Thorn. You can listen to that excellent presentation here.
