Bits and pieces, Aug. 9

August 9, 2013

bbiconAuthor appearance: David King, author of Ross Youngs: In Search of a San Antonio Baseball Legend (TX) (Sports History), will sign copies of his book tomorrow (Aug. 10) from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at Barnes and Noble at The Shops at La Cantera, San Antonio. The book traces the career of the Hall of Famer, who grew up in San Antonio and played for the New York Giants from 1917-26.

bbiconIn the “This was a controversy?” department: Dwight Eisenhower? Pro ball player or not? From the Abilene Reflector-Chronicle, “Did he play baseball for money before becoming a [West Point] Cadet? That has yet to be proven and therefore there should not be a controversy at all, according to Bill Swank.” Huh?

bbiconI imagine it takes a memorable event on the baseball diamond to get yourself included in Yale Alumni Magazine. Thank you, Ryan Lavarnway, for — to paraphrase Yogi Berra — making this necessary.

bbiconThis one is kind of cool: The Niles Herald-Spectator (along with a few affiliated newspapers) refers to my 501 Baseball Books in this article, “Niles resident Cameron’s baseball book ranked among the best.” The book, by Mike Cameron, is Public Bonehead, Private Hero: The Real Legacy of Baseball’s Fred Merkle. So now I’m a tastemaker!
