Curt Smith, Scott Pitoniak launch baseball radio show

January 7, 2013

Curt Smith and Scott Pitoniak will launch a new weekly baseball radio show — A Talk in the Park — on WYSL 92.1 FM and 1040 AM, on Saturday, Jan. 12, at noon, The 60-minute series will be available outside of Western New York via the Internet on wysl1040.com.

Pitoniak, left, recipient of more than 100 journalism awards, and Smith, whom USA Today calls “the voice of authority on baseball broadcasting,” will discuss the game’s hot issues. National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum President Jeff Idelson will be the show’s first guest, reviewing the week’s voting results.

Smith and Pitoniak will be joined regularly by five-time All-Star pitcher Johnny Antonelli and Frank Bilovsky, former columnist for the Philadelphia Bulletin and Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.

Antonelli, ace pitcher of the 1954 world champion New York Giants, will discuss his former team winning two of the past three World Series. Two weekly forums will debut: “Red Wings Report,” this week featuring the team’s award-winning general manager Dan Mason, detailing Wings prospects; and “Final Pitch” commentary – here, Smith comparing the Red Sox’ and Yankees’ attitude toward Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium, respectively.

A Talk in the Park will feature a Who’s Who of local and national baseball personalities, including Red Wing players and officials, Baseball Hall of Fame executives, and top active and retired big-league players, announcers, writers, players and officials.

I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with Smith several times, most recently for a podcast edition of the Bookshelf last February.
