Lest we forget: Roberto Clemente

December 27, 2012 · 1 comment

It’s almost inconceivable to me to think that we are coming on the 40th anniversary of the death of Roberto Clemente. That’s an entire generation ago and makes me feel much older than I am.

Kevin Guilfoile took some time out fro his carer as a novelist to write A Drive into the Gap, a touching memoir about his father, who was suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, and a mystery surrounding the bat purportedly used by Clemente to stroke his 3,000th — and final — hit.

Guilfoile retells the story today on ESPN’s Outside the Lines. He also provided this excerpt from on A Drive for ESPN The Magazine.

There’s also a nice website for the book.

Ron, thanks so much for the kind words. If I could correct one thing, though. A DRIVE INTO THE GAP is not available only as an eBook. You can get the kind you hold in your hands (and it’s quite beautifully made, too) for just $6.95 at adriveintothegap.com.
