Now hear this: Recent audio titles

December 12, 2012

Couldn’t go without posting something on 12/12/12.

Haven’t done one of thee in awhile, but I was reminded about the thrill of audio books from a Facebook post about The Glory of Their Times. While the print publication is a classic, the audio version might be even more illuminating, since you’re hearing from some of the actual old-timers interviewed by author Lawrence Ritter. Alas, it’s only available as an abridged recording. (NOTE: Clicking these links opens up the audio sample in a new window.)

So here are just a few samples from recent releases:

  • I particularly enjoy when the author/writer narrates his/her own work. After all, who better to know how it should sound? Here are Evander Lomke and Martin Rowe in an excerpt from their book Right off The Bat
  • Similarly, who better than Jim Bouton to read from his watershed memoir, Ball Four: The Final Pitch. This unabridged version, weighing in at 18 hours and 32 minutes, is a bargain at the MSRP of $29.95, but there are always deals.
  • Similarly (again), former pitcher Jim Abbott reads from his own memoir, Imperfect: An Improbable Life (unabridged).
  • It would have been great if R.A. Dickey read his own book, Wherever I Wind Up, but the audiobook (unabridged), nevertheless, is well worth hearing.
  • In the mood for a great work of fiction? Here’s The Iowa Baseball Confederacy, by W.P.Kinsella, and Calico Joe, by John Grisham (both unabridged, which, when you think about it, is the only way to go for fiction).
