Lest we forget: Jacques Barzun

October 28, 2012

The scholar who gave us perhaps the most quoted line about baseball, died yesterday at the age of 104.

The odd thing is, I just came across this excerpt from an article by Prof. Gerald Early the other day.And I have been seeking out a copy of God’s Country and Mine: A Declaration of Love Spiced with a Few Harsh Word in which the quote — “Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball” — appears. He also wrote an essay “On Baseball,” to which I cannot find an on-line link at this time. If anyone does find one, please share.

All due respect to Mr. Barzun, I never liked the fact that so many baseball authors used that line in their books in one way or another.
