Add Don Larsen to the list of former players who are putting up pieces of their legacies up for sale.
According to this piece in the NY Jewish Week, Larsen will auction off the uniform he wore when he pitched his World Series perfect game in 1956.
According to the story by Steve Lipman, “Besides the ball that in his right hand made history 56 years ago, Larsen’s uniform is probably his most-prized baseball possession. ‘I kept it in my closet and it was in great condition.’”
Some folks might think it’s a shame that these guys have to do this or that they’re just money hungry. But an item that has tremendous sentimental meaning for you might not do anything for me. Unless Larsen was planning on being buried in his uniform (not for many years to come, we hope), and some good can come of it, why shouldn’t he do what he wants?
