On the horizon…

October 11, 2012

Good news! Plans for a new issue of the Jewish Major Leaguer baseball card set is on the planning board. According to Bob Ruxin, author of An Athlete’s Guide to Agents and former director of business operations for the Israel Baseball League, the target date is “Hanukka 2014 or Passover 2015 in keeping with the half decade review theme. It could be sooner if more sponsorship/underwriting comes forth.”

If anyone is interested in being an “angel” for the project, contact Ruxin via email or by calling 781-734-2309.

If you’re looking for something more immediate, Marc Tracy (formerly of the online Tablet Magazine) and Franklin Foer (editor of The New Republic) have joined forces to edit Jewish Jocks: An Unorthodox Hall of Fame, published by Twelve and due out Oct. 30.

Jewish Jocks is not your typical history of athletes of the Hebraic persuasion. Rather, it’s an eclectic collection of essays from an assortment of almost 50 contributors on an amazing variety of sporting figures. Just to give you a taste: NY Times columnist David Brooks on Art Shamsky; Ira Berkow on Hank Greenberg; Buzz Bissinger on Barney Ross; Steven Pinker on Red Auerbach; Jonathan Safran Foer (Everything is Illuminated, etc.) on Bobby Fisher; Josh (Hang Up and Listen) Levin on NFLer Ron Mix; Jonathan Mahler on Daniel Okrent, one of the inventor’s of fantasy baseball; and Stephen J. Dubner (of Freakonomics fame) on Adam Greenberg.

Look for more information on both items in the weeks ahead.
