Hey, lighten up; it’s fiction!

The Atlantic posted this slideshow of sports movies with improbable story lines. I know you’re supposed to suspend disbelief at the cinema but even these stretch the limit, several of which have to do with pretending to be a different gender to be allowed to play the sport in question.

The baseball films include such clunkers as

  • Rookie of the Year
  • Little Big League
  • Bad News Bears
  • Ed (haven’t had a chance to see this one, thankfully)
  • Major League (although this is high on many folks’ favorite baseball flick)
  • Field of Dreams (ditto, but I still love the “In Reality” that appears that appears at the end of each selection. For FoD: “ They would not come because they are all dead. Ray would likely be committed to a mental institution, but not before his family lost their home and life savings because he was listening to the friendly suggestions of a dead baseball player. He would later be served with divorce papers in his sanitorium.”
