An oldie but a goodie: 0 for 37

September 11, 2012

From the Baseball Reliquary:

The Baseball Reliquary’s next program will be a rare screening of “0 for 37,” a television drama broadcast live and recorded via kinescope in 1953 (59 years ago!) on the Philco Television Playhouse (press release and flyer attached).  The program will be on Thursday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Burbank Central Library Auditorium, Burbank, California.  “0 for 37” is the story of a recently married major leaguer (played by James Broderick), considered one of the best players in the game, who goes through a prolonged batting slump, caused in large part by his worries about the new house his wife (played by Eva Marie Saint) has bought.  The kinescope is from the collection of the UCLA Film & Television Archive, and will be introduced by Dan Einstein, Television Archivist.  Those of you who grew up during TV’s Golden Age will recall that the Philco Television Playhouse blazed a trail for television drama, and its influence — embodied in the writers, directors, and actors who learned their crafts during the series’ pioneering days — is still being felt.  This is a great opportunity to see one of the original dramas from a series that gave television some of its finest hours.

Somewhat younger readers might remember Brodercik for his role as the father in the ABC series Family (1976-80), and Eva Marie Saint won the Best Actress Oscar in 1955 for her role in On the Waterfront.
