Another county heard from: Glenn Wilson

June 8, 2012

This spring, Triumph released memoirs/bios about Oil Can Boyd and Willie Mays Aikens. All props to these guys for being members of the select fraternity of those who made it to the Majors. But they really “deserve” books about them? Boyd was 78-77 over a 10-year career while Aikens  played eight seasons (done by 31) in which he hit a total of 110 home runs. They are more known for the off-the field antics: Boyd as a colorful character and Aikens for his imprisonment on drugs charges.

Now we have Glenn Wilson, who played for five teams over ten seasons in the 1980s and 90s. A solid defensive player known for his powerful outfield arm (18 assists in 1985, 20 the following year), Wilson was an All-Star for the Phillies in 1985 when he hit 14 home runs, drove in a career-high 104 runs, and batted .311.

From the book’s blurb:

Glenn Wilson believed from the time he was young that he was destined to be a pro athlete. His journey from lightly recruited high school student athlete to first round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers in 1980 was the script that many only dream about becoming reality. Glenn achieved his goal, playing ten seasons in Major League Baseball, including making the National League All-Star team in 1985. Injuries and disappointment shortened Glenn’s career and when investments soured, business ventures failed and he found himself living in pain and misery he went in search of truth and on that journey Glenn came to know what it meant to truly have a relationship with God. Headed Home takes you on this journey from childhood to athlete to a broken man finding the hope of knowing Jesus Christ. When Glenn experienced the grace of Christ, his life was never the same, this book brings us the hope that God has a plan for all of us and he wants to change our lives.

Here’s Wilson talking about his project:
