“For one brief shining moment…”

June 4, 2012

I was watching Johan Santana’s no-hitter on Friday and rejoiced as the Mets stormed onto the field to celebrate after the final out was recorded. I saw one fellow, in a Mets jersey and shorts, in the scrum and assumed he was a trainer; the players didn’t seem to think anything was amiss either. How surprising it was then, to see security guards rush out and wrestle him to the ground.

Turns out this guy was a crasher.

According to ensuing stories, Rafael Diaz spent the next 38 hours in jail and faces up to one year in prison.

On the one hand, that seems excessive for a moment of exhilaration. On the other hand, if you don’t crack down on this type of behavior, people will feel emboldened and the next time a Mets pitcher throws a no-hitter, we’ll have to go through this all over again.
