Aussie author interview: Chad Harbach

May 29, 2012

I get a kick out of how foreign media handle the occasional baseball-themed story. They almost seem apologetic that they have to explain what baseball is, as in the introduction to this audio interview with the author of The Art of Fielding from the Australian Broadcasting Company:

American Author Chad Harbach is hot stuff in the literary world at the moment.  His book The Art of Fielding took him 10 years to write.  It’s about sport, baseball to be exact, and it’s won rave reviews … even from those with little interest in, or knowledge of, the American sport.  Publishers fought just for the right to publish his book and ended up paying him $750,000 just to publish it, that’s before a copy has been sold.  He was in Australia for the Sydney Writers Festival and came to Brisbane last week speaking at a number of events and I managed to grab hold of him.  His book revolves around baseball so I Steve Austin first asked him if he could describe its influence in America?

I don’t know enough about Australian media to know, but is this for real or is it one of those Ali G-type situations? Anyway, it is with great pleasure that I, Ron Kaplan, bring you this item.
