♦ Catching up with Tom Hoffarth’s 30 days/30 books project, we have reviews of Andy Strasberg’s Baseball Fantography, Under the Halo: The Official History of Angels Baseball, Jim Abbot’s Imperfect: An Improbable Life, and Paul Dickson’s Bill Veeck: Baseball Greatest Maverick.
♦ The Trentonian ran this review on The Rotation:A Season with the Phillies and the Greatest Pitching Staff Ever Assembled by Jim Salisbury and Todd Zolecki.
♦ The Monroe, La. News-Star posted this review of Harvey Araton’s Driving Mr. Yogi, which features their native son, Ron Guidry.
♦ The New America blog posted this appreciation of George Will’s baseball titles.
♦ The Daily Beast offered this assessment of The 13 Best Baseball Books: From The Art of Fielding to Moneyball. Needless to say I have reservations about TAOF, which I’ve always felt is a baseball book for non-baseball fans. I was also surprised to find Michael Shapiro’s The Last Good Season included. It’s a fine book, but not top13-good. On the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised to find Philip Roth’s The Great American Novel on the list.
♦ Barnes and Nobel has its own on-line newsletter which carries reviews. This one features some new titles, including Damn Yankees, Summer of ’68, Driving Mr. Yogi, A People’s History of Baseball, and Conspiracy of Silence: Sportswriters and the Long Campaign to Desegregate Baseball.
