Literary birthday greetings: Dick Allen

March 8, 2012

One of the best players of his generation not to be elected to thew Hall of Fame, Allen turns 70 today.

Allen published his autobio/mem — Crash: The Life and Times of Dick Allen, written with Tim Whitaker.

He was also the focal point for books about Philadelphia’s racial attitudes, as profiled by William Kashatus in September Swoon: Richie Allen, the ’64 Phillies, And Racial Integration, released in 2004. Funny thing is, Allen hated to be called “Richie,” so I’m wondering if the author titled the book as such to emphasize the contentious relationship between the ballplayer and the City of Brotherly Love.
