Female umpires to get another look?

January 12, 2012

I found the headline of this article — “Will Expanded Replay Lead to More Women Umpires?” — most intriguing. Aside from the deeper question about the opportunities (or lack thereof) for “women in blue,” as discussed in this article on the Baseball Reflections blog, I have yet to hear why the adoption of technology should have any gender connotation. It’s kind of insulting when you think about it. Do women need the additional assistance of video replay because they can’t handle the job? Because they make more mistakes than men? Hmm.

Of course, there have been a handful of pioneering women, such as Pam Postema (You’ve Got to Have Balls to Make It in This League: My Life as an Umpire) and Bernice Gera, baseball’s first female professional ump,  but surprisingly nothing for the past few years.
