Moron the Mets’ 9/11 hat fiasco

September 14, 2011

If there’s one thing I hate, it’s spin for the sake of saving one’s a**.

Of course, this could be something coming out of Bud Selig’s PR machine, but according to an article in the New York Post claims the Commissioner’s office never threatened the Mets with fines if they wore caps honoring the first responders or that the items were physically removed from the team.

Of course this is the Post were talking about here. Several of the other stories I’ve seen on this issue refer to the NY tabloid as their source. Nothing in the Times about it. So…

The Times did mention the “minor controversy” in their Bats blog, but basically using it as an excuse for losing focus in their 3-2 loss to the Nationals on Monday. In the entry manager Terry Collins was quoted as saying “‘That takes away from the game…. That takes away from their preparation. They’re all being asked questions that they’re afraid to answer. They’re afraid to say the wrong thing.’”

Afraid? What country is this anyway? At this point, I would hope public opinion would be so strong in favor of those who wanted to wear the caps that neither the Mets nor MLB would threaten reprisals for the players’ speaking their minds, as broadcaster Gary Cohen did on the air the next night.

According to the Post piece, it was Mets’ management that didn’t want to “risk the wrath of Selig” because MLB had given the team a $25 million loan in the midst of all their financial problems.

Pitcher R.A. Dickey had tweeted “For all those upset that we didn’t wear the hats, I understand your anger. However, they physically took them from us after the ceremony.” MLB denies this, saying that they were inside the clubhouse, being signed or waiting to be signed for charity. So someone is not being honest here. Spin.
