Literary blasts from the past, July 20

July 20, 2011

From the Baseball-Reference.com Bullpen:

  • San Francisco’s Gaylord Perry connects for his first Major League homer, to beat the Dodgers, 7 – 3. The previous year, Giants’ manager Alvin Dark had remarked that “They’ll put a man on the moon before he hits a home run.” Perry’s homer comes about 20 minutes after the club house receives word that Neil Armstrong has set foot on the moon. Brother Jim goes one better by winning two games in Minnesota’s sweep of the Pilots, including the completion of the previous day’s suspended game, then follow with a 4 – 0 win. Perry tosses 11 innings of shutout ball to win the pair.

  • Hank Aaron hits the 755th, and last, home run of his career in a 6-2 win for the Brewers over the  California Angels.
