For Black Sox, new twist on an old story

July 19, 2011

Kelly D. Cleaver Sr. recently published Sorry Kid, I Don’t Much Feel Like Playing Today which, according to the blurb on the iUniverse publishing site, “settles the debates once and for all by breaking down each player’s contributions on a play-by-play basis. Section one addresses Chicago’s pitching and fielding, while section two is all about the White Sox hitters; the final section analyzes the overall statistics. Each player is put under the microscope. Each play is dissected and analyzed. You will be the final judge. Journey back to the second decade of the twentieth century to relive the most famous World Series in baseball history.”

Kind of surprised none of the previous books have taken this approach, but I also can’t imagine you can look at a play-by-play account and look into a player’s intent. It would have been interesting to see a sample, but that function wasn’t working on the site.

The author was the subject of a profile on Petoskeynews.com, from Petoskey, MI.

From the article:

Cleaver structured his book by examining each of the starters by chapter. Within each player’s chapter, Cleaver examines his play-by-play through each game the ball player finished.
“All the fielders are analyzed throughout. All errors are analyzed, and every batter that Eddie Cicotte and Lefty Williams faced are in there,” he said. “I believe that when you finish reading it, you’re going to feel like you were at this World Series.”
