So how quickly can we make money off of this?

July 6, 2011

As of this writing, Derek Jeter stands just four hits away from the magical 3,000. ESPN is working on Derek Jeter 3K, a  “documentary” “Set to Air Just Weeks After 3,000th Hit,” according to a press release.

Can the souvenir t-shirts, caps, etc. be far behind? The name seems like a natural for a video game, doesn’t it?

There’s talk of playing Jeter in such a way that he won’t get the milestone on the road. The Braves tried to do this in 1974 with Hank Aaron. They started the season on the road against Cincinnati and he hit homer #714 in the first game. The front office want to keep him out of the erst of the series against the Reds, but Commissioner Bowie Kuhn put the kibosh on that one, forcing Atlanta to return Aaron to the lineup. Fortunately for all involved, Hammerin’ Hank got the record-setter in front of the home town fans.

It’s a bit different with Jeter. Since he’s coming off a stint on the disabled list, the Yankees could easily claim to be resting him, you know, just being cautious.

I wish Jeter all the best, however this falls out. He seems like one of the class acts in the game.
