Literary blasts from the past: Jimmy Piersall, Larry Doby

June 23, 2011

Welcome to a new feature celebrating some of the great moments in the game.

On this date in 1963, Jimmy Piersall, then a member of the Mets,  hit his 100th home run and marked the occasion by running the bases backwards. You’d think his manager, Casey Stengel, would appreciate the creativity, but apparently he did not and Piersall was soon gone. (Pertinent title: Fear Strikes Out: The Jim Piersall Story.)

Also, Larry Doby retired from the Cleveland Indians and signed with the Chunichi Dragons. (Pertinent title: Larry Doby: The Struggle of the American League’s First Black Player.)
