Literary birthday greetings: Buddy

Bud Harrelson, the Mets’ shortstop of my youth, turns 66 (!) today. He published How to Play Better Baseball, an instructional, in 1972 and is a staple of any book on Mets’ history.

Also born this date, Yankees Hall of Fame catcher Bill Dickey (1907). Amazingly, there is no stand-alone biography on Dickey, although he’s a fixture in any book about the Yankees, particularly the Murderer’s Row era. He also had a speaking role — playing himelf — in The Pride of the Yankees and The Stratton Story (although I can’t recall if that one was speaking or not).

My favorite part of this baseball card is Nolan Ryan walking behind the mound and calling the runner out.

Indeed, this was a revolutionary set for Topps.
