Literary birthday greetings: Captain Video

May 9, 2011

I used to have one of these comic book inserts that came in packs of Topps cards. Those were the days.

I have a special affinity for players who remain with one team for their career: Carl Yazstremski, Cal Ripken, Jr., Mantle, Feller, Musial, etc. Free agency has rendered such a feat exceedingly rare. (Several years ago, The New York Times produced a pretty item featuring a a dozen or so contemporary players; the date isn’t at my fingertips at the moment, but I’ll check and update this entry.)

Add to that list Tony Gwynn, the Hall of Fame outfielder who spent his entire 20-year career with the San Diego Padres. That he was inducted into Cooperstown with Ripken was especially nice.

By the way, Gwynn earned his nickname by being one of the first players to study his swing via the use of videotape.
