Literary birthday greetings, belated

March 30, 2011

Busy day yesterday, so I didn’t have a chance to post these.

Billy Beane, the inspiration behind Michael Lewis’ Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, turned 49 yesterday.

Denny McLain, the last 30-game winner and one of baseball’s “bad boys,” turned 67. He released I Told You I Wasn’t Perfect in 2007 (as opposed to David Well’s 2003 Perfect I’m Not: Boomer on Beer, Brawls, Backaches, and Baseball; I don’t know why I thought the title was Perfect I ain’t, which would seem to make more non-grammatical sense in Well’s case). McLain also published Strikeout: The Story of Denny McLain, written with Mike Nahrstedt in 1988.

Tommy Holmes, a popular New York figure from his years with the Brooklyn Dodgers, was born this date in 1917. He wrote Dodger Daze and Knights: Enough of a Ball Club’s History to Explain Its Reputation in 1953 and Baseball’s Best: The All-Time Major League Baseball Team with Tom Meany in 1964.

And Cy Young, the winningest pitcher in Major League history, was born this date in 1867. Reed Browning published Cy Young: A Baseball Life in 2000.
