Shameless self-promotion: Bardball’s Greatest Hits

March 24, 2011

Since I wasn’t on the What’s on Second Internet radio show this week, I had to get my “me” fix in somehow.

My ode to [now former] Mets pitcher Ollie Perez was included in Bardball.com’s 2010’s Greatest Hits!, a collection of baseball poetry.

So it’s Frost, Longfellow, Kaplan. End of story. That’s all you need.

The pamphlet is published annually by Bardball.com, “the only website for daily baseball poetry.” Other contributors to the issue include Gary Gillette (Total Baseball companion series and many other titles), Stuart Shea (Wrigley Field: The Unauthorized Biography), Hart Seely (Oh, Holy Cow! The Collected Poems of Phil Rizzuto, with Tom Peyer), and James Finn Garner (Politically Correct Bedtime Stories), among many others.

Here’s the “winning” entry:

Mets Fans’ Sad Lament

With apologies to Franklin Pierce Adams on the 100th anniversary of his original poem

These are the saddest words Mets fans could hear:
Ollie (Martinez) Perez.

Walking the enemy year after year:
Ollie (Martinez) Perez.

Taking his time as he misses his pitches,
Giving up homers to those sons of bitches,
All during which we don’t know where his brain is:
Ollie (Martinez) Perez.
