Because you can keep a Medal of Freedom on your bookshelf

Doug Mills/The New York Times

The NY Times‘ George Vecsey wrote this piece focusing on Stan Musial and basketball’s Bill Russell as among the latest group of recipients for America’s highest civilian honor.

Isn’t it kind of funny: no matter how much of a big shot they are — they could be President of the United States or a billionaire business man or a decorated war hero — they still act like little kids when they meet a sports legend.

By the way, Vecsey will release a new biography on the Cardinals’ Hall of Famer  — Stan Musial: An American Life (ESPN) — this spring.

This brings up an interesting point, especially since ESPN has been in the news lately regarding its personnel and endorsements.

Recall that Erin Andrews was called into question for noting that TCU wasn’t getting good traction from their Nike footwear during the Sugar Bowl. What’s the big dea, you ask? Isn’t she just doing a good thorough job? Well, the thing is,  Andrews has a shoe deal with Rebok.

She might have gotten around the controversy had she not mentioned the brand, but because she did several articles and columns called her to task. (It was later revealed that such a shoe deal is not uncommon among her ESPN colleagues.)

Now, I know that in an effort to avoid all tint of improprieties and conflicts of interest the Times does not allow its writers to sit as judges or voters for any awards. So my question — and I mean absolutely nothing by posing it; it’s just out of curiosity given what’s happened recently  — does Vecsey’s coverage of Musial give him any ancillary publicity for his upcoming book? I wonder how many even know he has one coming out. I just felt it would be remiss to ignore mentioning the situation.
