“The Great Emancipator” would have been 72 today.
Flood published his story — The Way It Is — in 1971, the year he retired from the game. Since then, several books about Flood’s role in creating the free agent dream (or nightmare, depending on your point of view), have been released with lesser or greater legal spins. Among them:
- A Well-Paid Slave: Curt Flood’s Fight for Free Agency in Professional Sports
- One Man Out: Curt Flood Versus Baseball
- Stepping Up: The Story of All-Star Curt Flood and His Fight for Baseball Players’ Rights
- The Curt Flood Story: The Man Behind the Myth
- Baseball and Antitrust: The Legislative History of the Curt Flood Act of 1998, Public Law No. 105-297, 112 Stat. 2824
- Baseball’s Reserve System: The Case and Trial of Curt Flood Vs. Major League Baseball
