Moving from second base to pitching: Steve Sax

January 6, 2011

From a press release on Business Wire:

Steve Sax has written a new book, SHIFT: Change Your Mindset and You Change Your World. He will begin his book tour in February 2011.

Sax, who played Major League Baseball for eighteen years, suffered from the inability to throw the ball for a brief period in 1983. Sax’s book shares how he was able to overcome his difficulties and then become a two-time World Series Champion and five-time All Star. SHIFT also uses examples from his careers in broadcasting, financial planning and as a professional motivational speaker.

“It is my firm belief that everyone has the power within themselves to succeed,” said Sax, “but it takes hard work and perseverance.”

Donald Trump recently endorsed Sax’s book, “Steve Sax has had both the highs and lows that can result in great substance and multiple achievements. His book reflects the wisdom he has gained through his experiences.”

SHIFT will be available in book stores February 1st. Advance copies are available for purchase online at www.stevesaxspeaks.com

I remember a funny story about Sax, but I can’t remember from where. There are probably a few versions of it, maybe even with different personnel involved (it’s one of those interchangeable things).

So Dodger skipper Tommy Lasorda sees his third baseman Pedro Guerrero mumbling to himself on the field in a tight situation. When Guerrero comes into the dugout, the manager asks him, “What are you thinking out there?” And the answer from the defense-challenged ballplayer is that he’s praying.

“Really?” asks Lasorda. “What are you praying for?”

“That they don’t hit the ball to me,” Guerrero replies.

“What? That’s what you’re praying for?” demands an outraged Lasorda.

“No, I’m also praying they don’t it to Sax.”

(Bada-boom.)

Thank you, I’ll be here all week.
