“Quickie” publications

December 10, 2010

Not sure how I feel about these things. On the one hand, the technology is available so that it’s easy to turn books like these over quickly. On the other hand, is it an homage, or just a money grab?

Newspapers (such as the San Francisco Chronicle, left) have managed fast turnarounds when their local teams have won a championship. They have all the graphics and editorial copy at their disposal, but I’ve always considered it as somehow taking advantage, grabbing the fans while they’re still basking in the reflected glory, and vulnerable to capturing the moment…

I’ve seen bios come out hard upon the deaths of internationally renown figures like Michael Jackson and Princess Diana, but this is the first time I’ve seen one for an individual athlete. Ron Santo died Dec. 2, and this was released less than two weeks later by the Chicago Tribune via Triumph Books.
