Baseball for Aliens

November 18, 2010

As in extra-terrestrials.

In his new book, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents Earth (The Book): A Visitor’s Guide to the Human Race, Jon Stewart hopes to explain/justify to anyone (thing?) out there in the vast universe what life was (!) like on our little blue planet.

Earth considers science, religion, politics, and pop culture, including the (over)importance of sports, including soccer, golf, surfing and buzkashi. (What, you don’t know buzkashi?? Oh, all right.)

As the All-American sport, I thought I’d relay what Stewart has to say about the national pastime, which he describes as

A sport where two nine-men teams tried to hit a small ball with a wooden bat, then run around a circuit of four bases. Games lasted nine innings or forever, depending on the score.

He continues:

Why we liked it: “The seventh-inning stretch. Few sports encouraged napping by players or fans, but baseball not only encouraged it, it had a built-in wake-up call.”

Who played it: “Spitters.”

Skills Required: “Covert ball-scratching.”

Often Heard on the Field: “Throw ’em the heater, Ricky!”

Faces of the Game:

Stewart also seeks to explain the mania for sports memorabilia, citing the famous Honus Wagner collectible as the prime example of the lunacy in “You had to be there”:

"This man would have had to play professional baseball for 280 years...

... to afford this tobacco card with his photo on it."
