Literary baseball greetings: Rem Dawg and Bucky

November 8, 2010

Jerry Remy, the Red Sox’ popular second baseman from the late ’70s to mid ’80s, turns 58 today. A local product who made good in Red Sox Nation, Remy became a broadcaster following his active career and wrote a couple of primers on the game: Jerry Remy’s Red Sox Heroes: The RemDawg’s All-Time Favorite Red Sox, Great Moments, and Top Teams and Watching Baseball, 4th: Discovering the Game within the Game, now in its fourth edition (have the basics changed that much since he began writing?), as well as a couple of kids’ books.

Hall of Famer Bucky Harris was born this date in1896.

Harris served as player-manager for the Washington Senators and Detroit Tigers. He led the Nats to their last World Series title in 1925 and another pennant the next season). He also led the Yankees in 1950 (World Series title over the “Whiz Kids”) and 1951 (third place finish), before returning to Washington and Detroit. In 18 season,s Harris compiled a record of 2,158-2,219. Amazingly, there’s no stand-alone book on him, although he is prominently mentioned in books about the Senators and baseball managers.
