Brother, can you spare a dime?

October 7, 2010

How about 2,063,333,890 of  ’em? That’s the payroll for the New York Yankees at the beginning of the 2010 season, according to USA Today?

Don’t know how I missed this one from The New York Times, especially since it has such a cool graphic:

Putting a price tag on winning

Fans are fairly inured to the high salaries these days, but years ago, writers (sports and non-)used to love to break down how much a hitter would get per at-bat, or a pitcher per win. I recently saw something about how much the Red Sox paid Kevin Youkilis not to play because of his time on the disabled list (should have bookmarked it at the time, dammit). Hey, it’s not like the guy was Oliver Perez, who basically took up a roster spot, collected his salary — plus MLB’s generous per diem —  while keeping a watch over the bullpen bench.
